The Truth About Your Wick: Why Soy Candles Are Better For You and The Environment

Candles date back to more than 5,000 years ago. With new waxes being introduced and creation methods improving, choosing the perfect candle can be a tough decision. Rather than living in a world of uncertainty, we’ve crafted a simple guide educating you on The Truth About Your Wick.

To truly understand what you are purchasing as a consumer, you must understand the production process.

Wax from soy candles are made from the oil of soybeans. The soybeans are cracked and rolled into flakes. These flakes are then hydrogenated. The hydrogenation process alters the melting point, allowing the oil to become solid at room temperature. This process makes soy wax especially unique because it provides extended burning time when used for candles.

You may be questioning, why is this important? Since The U.S grows a vast majority of the world’s soybeans, purchasing soy candles provides economic support for American Farmers across the nation.

What about Beeswax?

Although Beeswax is a healthier alternative to paraffin, it is not best for the environment. Bees use beeswax to create combs, which are the building blocks of their homes. When beeswax is extracted, it compromises the living structures. The removal process often creates unstable living areas for our friendly pollinators. This leads to honeycombs collapsing, often leaving bees and their young vulnerable to illnesses and death. Since soybeans are a fully renewable source, we are only limited to use as much as we plant without harming wildlife.

While the bees and farmers will thank you, so will your bank account. The benefit of soy candles goes far beyond altruistic behavior. Soy candles have an average burn time of 90 hours per candle. This average burn time will significantly reduce how often you need to re-buy candles. With the advantages of slow burn times, the molecular makeup of soy wax, breaks down fragrances and oils slower. This allows your favorite scent to travel through your home, creating a lasting fragrance throughout and a relaxing environment.

Soy candles are cleaner to inhale and healthier for your respiratory system, unlike Paraffin wax. Ultimately, paraffin wax is leftover black sledge that has been rejected by oil and gas companies. This left-over oil is gathered then bleached; turning the black sledge into the angelic white paraffin candle most are familiar with. Paraffin wax manufacturers then add chemicals such as acetone, toluene and benzene to create longer burn times. Studies have shown these chemicals directly affect the central nervous system. These chemical packed candles are then sold to companies who add artificial colors and synthetic fragrance. When you burn a paraffin candle, you are polluting in-home air quality. The soot and fumes released from a burning paraffin candle is harmful to everyone. However, they can be especially dangerous to those who suffer from allergies and respiratory issues, such as asthma.

At JK Candle Company we hand-pour our 100% Soy candles with Phthalate free fragrances. Without these harmful chemicals, our candles won’t pollute the air quality of your home. This is great news for holidays, casual gatherings, or simple relaxation. JK Candle Company can be enjoyed by children and family members of all ages, worry free!

It is now time to discover your new favorite fragrance while feeling good about the world and even better about yourself!

  • Would love to know if you do a tea light sampler pack where the customer can pick the candles so they know what they like and so they can purchase the bigger candles, also we can try new candles?
